On da Rode

K, so I wrote an entry from a hotel, it’s only fitting that I then write one from the car. I mean, why not? And so, I will write my findings while trying to connect my brother’s laptop to mine directly. First off, if I use both built in adapters, it doesn’t work. This is obvious, as I don’t have a crossover cable to use, so of course it wouldn’t work. Both computers are trying to send data on the same pins and recieve data on the same pins.

Yet, if I plug in my Linksys/Network Everywhere “Fast Ethernet 10/100″ PCMCIA card to my laptop, and use the built in on my brother’s, it works. Which is kind of weird. A cheap (I think I got it for like $20 3 years ago) PCMCIA card has the ability to tell if you’re using a crossover cable or not, and if not, switch the pins it’s using, but not my built-in Realtek 8139. (I only know that from kernel compiling, since Linux uses module “8139too”).

Not like connecting my computer to his is necessary or important in any way shape or form. Merely using a $2.50 headphone splitter so he can listen to my music is good enough for him.
I think I’m suffering from internet withdrawl. I’ll have access tonight, thankfully.

Mmm, Grapes.

So…Wow. I’m in Daytona. In a hotel. With internet that costs $9.95 a day and isn’t worth it considering the amount of time I’ve spent in the room so far. And so, I am currently writing this blog post from %SystemRoot%\notepad.exe. So, the hotel room is nice. It’s a 2 room hotel room with two beds+deck+TV in one room, and a couch+TV in the other. And it’s all good, considering it’s free thanks to Hilton Honors. And so I just got back from dinner, and noticed that a light was on. Which is odd, I could have sworn I had turned them all off. So I get in, and right next to my laptop is a nice little plate with grapes and strawberries and cheese and wine and stuff. With a business card of Hilton’s VP. Still not sure why, maybe due to the Hilton Honors thing. But it’s all good. I think they moved my laptop though in order to fit the plate. =O Hilton people, if you are reading this, don’t mess with my laptop, kthx.

/me eats a grape.

Free OS Alternative: ReactOS

http://www.reactos.org/.

Aims to be fully Windows compatable. Not sure how but I get Micro$oft will try to take them down once they get closer to actually competing.

I tried it out, works, even if a bit buggy. I’m attempting to build my own copy now, I’ll see if SVN is any further ahead/more stable. Screenshots if I feel like it later.

Digg - The 5-in-1 network admin’s cable

Do you find yourself toting several of these cables everywhere you go? Do you often wish you had brought a different cable with you after you have arrived on-site? There is nothing worse than showing up for an on-site visit without the correct cable you need for a job. So what is a network admin to do, carry around several bulky cables everywhere?

I wanna do this someday, but I don’t have the stuff to do it.

Digg - Microsoft Employee Recommends Open Source Windows

“Open Source Windows Sounds interesting — plus he wants our feedback! Leave him your thoughts (^_^)”

Wow…Yeah.

I agree with the comments of others that say MS shouldn’t opensource everything. Maybe older code like 95 or 98 or even 3.1 and DOS. Or they could opensource their accessories like Media Player and Notepad, that sounds like a good idea too. The thing is, the threat of what license and would it provide enough freedom to do any help. That, and bugs that may cripple the software, but with old software that shouldn’t be too much of a problem, as long as they only release the source for rare-ly used programs. It might effect things like Media Player, but it might help as well.

WinRAR vs. 7-Zip

After reading this comparison of WinRAR and 7-Zip, I stated that I should look into RARing files. And I did. I installed WinRAR and tested it against 7-Zip. Here’s the results

The folder I zipped was my 341 MB Apache folder for my test server that I run on this computer for development. It contains the Apache applications, PHP applications, images, PHP scripts, HTML files, some text files, and some video. I chose it solely because I needed to back it up, but it does have nice file diversity. =P Compression was done on my laptop, with its 1.3 GHz Celeron and 1.25 GB of RAM

WinRar

RAM Used: 62 MB
CPU Used: Used all free CPU.
Time Elapsed: 12:54
Compressed Size: 306,408 KB (299 MB)
Not much to say here, it compressed, nothing notable happened.

I did two tests for 7-Zip because as stated in the comments in that article, 7-Zip Ultra is rediculously RAM-eating.

7-Zip Ultra

RAM Used: 528 MB
CPU Used: Fluctuated, but usually used all free CPU.
Time Elapsed: 13:30
Compressed Size: 305,356 KB (298 MB)
So, for about 30 seconds extra and a lot of RAM, you too can save 1 MB of space! 7-Zip did warn me that it’d need 510 MB, so it’s calculations there worked.

7-Zip Maximum

RAM Used: 191 MB
CPU Used: Around 75%
Time Elapsed: 10:30
Compressed Size: 306,041 KB (298 MB)
Overall, I think this one did best. It beat the other two tests in time by a lot, and was only 700 KB larger than Ultra for less than half the RAM.

So, as soon as I actually release the new version of my portfolio, this will definately be going in the reviews section. =P

Woot, Stereo

So, I was downstairs, getting myself a nice piece of (leftover, but still good) July 4th cake, when I heard odd clicking noises. It took me a few seconds, but I finally pinpointed that it was coming from upstairs. It was then that I realized, “Hey, that’s my stereo.” Or the high-end of the sound spectrum being played by my stereo. And my music isn’t even on that loud. That’s how awesome my stereo is.

This post brought to you by the aforementioned “nice piece of (leftover, but still good) July 4th cake”

Net Neutrality Post Pt 2

Yeah, I’ve been thinking about it more. Of course, my position is still the same, I like my internet the way it is. But I’ve come up with some actual points as to why.

First of all, there’s the classic reasons everyone uses: It’ll kill small businesses trying to start up on the internet, kill people’s attempts trying to express themselves, etc.

But it’ll also screw up the entire hosting industry. Think about it. With net neutrality gone, people would have to pay to get faster internet access. This might be done in a variety of ways. First of all, it might be on a per server/ip basis, or on a per domain basis. Then, there’s whether the hosting company would pay for it, or whether the customer would pay. If the hosting company had to pay, they’d have to raise their prices and the customer would pay more either way. That’d cut into profits of hosting companies a lot, and I’m sure many would close. Free hosting would have more ads on it, since that’s how they make their money. With higher prices/more ads, less people would buy hosting. Or, there’s the companies that decide not to pay the fees for fast access. No one will buy from them either, since the speeds would suck.

And thus, do your part and help Save the Internet today!
